Smart Pumps, Safer Care: A Pharmacist’s Guide to Drug Library Optimization and Interoperability

Intravenous smart infusion pumps (IVSPs) are among the most widely used devices in healthcare with over 90% of hospitalized patients receiving IV therapy from infusion pumps. Large-volume pumps represent the most versatile and widely utilized IVSPs in adult care settings and are also used in pediatric settings. IVSPs have helped to prevent under and overdosing of medications and provided access to data that can be analyzed to improve patient safety, yet many healthcare institutions have yet to fully optimize their functionality. This educational activity will provide pharmacists with a practical and comprehensive review of large-volume IVSPs, including key features, best practices, and considerations for use. This activity will highlight opportunities to optimize drug libraries and explore electronic health record (EHR) interoperability, workflow integration, and strategies for quality improvement. Faculty will share their experience with IVSPs, drug library optimization, and opportunities to promote safer medication use.

Samuel Ubanyionwu, PharmD, EMBA, is a Medication Management Informaticist at Mayo Clinic and an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Ubanyionwu earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Texas Southern University (TSU), his PharmD from the TSU College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and his EMBA from the Valar Institute at Quantic School of Business and Technology. He completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Harris Health in Houston, Texas and a PGY-2 in Pharmacy Informatics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is the Director-at-Large Elect for the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology and serves as the Chair of the Mayo Clinic Enterprise Drug Library Committee.

Sheryl Krause, PhD, RN, CEN, ACNS-BC, is Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist of Emergency Services at Fort HealthCare in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Dr. Krause received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Her minor in Industrial & Systems Engineering was focused on human factors in healthcare. While in the PhD program, Dr. Krause led a project to implement smart pump technology and interoperability at Fort HealthCare.

The target audience for these educational activities is front-line clinical pharmacists, pharmacists in leadership positions including pharmacy executives, managers, and supervisors, and those in product procurement roles who can identify specific opportunities for smart infusion pumps.
