Her Story
Mrs. Stump received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in Storrs, CT in 1991 and her Master’s degree in Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH in 1993. She completed an ASHP accredited residency in hospital pharmacy administration at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH, while enrolled in the Master’s program. She began her career as a Manager of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Grant Medical Center before moving to Yale New Haven Hospital in 1996 where she continued her career in leading pharmacy practice, Drug Information Services, and formulary management. As technology, informatics, and information systems became more and more important to advancing pharmacy practice, Mrs. Stump was often an early adopter and change agent which led to her transition into Healthcare IT in 2004. She currently serves as the Chief Information and Digital Transformation Officer for the Yale New Haven Health System and Yale Medicine, advancing digital and technology solutions across the enterprise, and co-leads the Yale New Haven Health Center for Healthcare Innovation. Advancing automation, digital, and telehealth services to support pharmacy practice and operations remain an area of special interest. Mrs. Stump is also passionate about advancing women in leadership and remains a leader and mentor in national organizations driving equity in healthcare.

Facility
Yale New Haven Health is a nonprofit health system that includes five acute-care hospitals, a medical foundation, several multispecialty centers and dozens of outpatient locations and ambulatory sites stretching from Westchester County, New York, throughout Connecticut and to Westerly, Rhode Island. The Digital and Technology Solutions Team comprises 700 health information technology, data scientist, and cybersecurity experts supporting the patient care, teaching, and research missions of Yale New Haven Health and Yale Medicine. The Yale New Haven Health Pharmacy Services teams coordinate comprehensive medication management to patients in the hospitals and through ambulatory, retail and specialty pharmacies across the enterprise. Digital and telehealth services are core components of the care delivery model.

Recent Significant Projects
I led the creation of the Automation Center of Excellence to drive the evaluation and adoption of robotic process automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions from the back office to the bedside. The results of these initiatives are reducing administrative burden, freeing up clinicians and staff time, and enhancing revenue and financial performance. This work includes deploying generative AI solutions to create physician and pharmacist notes, detect clinical deterioration in hospitalized patients, generate and summarize content and perform business functions including prior authorization, coding, and application to medication assistance programs.

Involvement in ASHP
I am the newly appointed and inaugural Chair of the ASHP Section of Digital and Telehealth Practitioners Executive Committee and a Fellow of ASHP. I have been a member of ASHP for over 30 years and am delighted to assume a leadership role in charting the course for pharmacy in the digital age.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?
ASHP attracted me as a new clinician and a hopeful leader in pharmacy practice. ASHP helped me connect with others at a national level, learn from peers and leaders, and grow my leadership skills with a service- and curiosity-driven approach and a business-oriented mindset. I remain involved in ASHP after 30 years to keep advancing and influencing our pharmacy profession.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area
Take advantage of the chance to engage with patients through new and creative methods. Learn how digital platforms and artificial intelligence work, collaborate with your IT and Digital partners, excel at communicating and tracking patients remotely, and advocate for patient privacy and fairness. Instead of worrying about losing your job to technology, concentrate on learning and creating models of care that leverage the unique skills and human touch of the pharmacy workforce.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
ASHP offers the pharmacy workforce the opportunity to engage in learning, sharing best practices, and networking with a diverse community of leaders, clinicians, technicians, and advocates all focused on advancing health through comprehensive medication management as part of interdisciplinary care teams. The networking, advocacy, and educational opportunities are tremendous resources.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP provides invaluable education, advocacy, and accreditation services that set the standards and drive performance across our profession. They advocate nationally for the laws, rules and regulations that are needed to support the safe and equitable provision of medication management services. ASHP is also charting the path for future pharmacy clinicians and the pharmacy workforce as a whole and is actively engaging to create a vision and strategy for the assessment and adoption of emerging technologies and generative AI. This is a critically important area of focus for our profession, and ASHP’s ability to leverage its members’ expertise, the voices of leaders and practitioners, and to influence nationally is invaluable.
