Advancing Pharmacy Leadership in Next-Generation Therapeutics
Dear Colleagues,
I’m excited to share important updates as we advance the safe, effective, and equitable use of cell and gene therapies, as well as other breakthrough treatments.
Today, we are pleased to announce the appointment of the inaugural steering committee for the ASHP Center for Next-Generation Therapeutics, which we launched in September to ensure members are well-positioned to lead the strategy and utilization of these therapies in collaboration with our interdisciplinary partners.
The committee reflects a broad range of practice settings, clinical expertise, and roles, including clinical pharmacy specialists, medication safety leaders, revenue cycle and payer experts, investigational drug specialists, clinical executives, and chief pharmacy officers. We also ensured the committee included leaders from pediatric hospitals and experts in research and investigational drugs. Medical, nursing, and other experts will soon join the committee to provide multidisciplinary perspectives.
The committee will begin work immediately, using recommendations from the ASHP Summit on Advanced Therapeutics, held during Pharmacy Futures 2025. This weekend, AJHP published the summit proceedings, which include a roadmap for addressing six key priorities for implementing these treatments:
- Health-System Policy, Governance, and Finance
- Patient Care and Access
- Implementation and Operational Considerations
- Workforce Readiness
- Professional Resource Development
- Advocacy and Research
These recommendations provide actionable insights for pharmacy teams serving as clinical leaders of advanced therapies, helping to shape best practices as adoption accelerates. The committee will use this roadmap to guide its work, and we look forward to sharing updates in the months ahead.
In the meantime, I encourage you to utilize the center’s resources. We recently launched a virtual roundtable series that explores opportunities for health-system pharmacists in managing next-generation therapies. The first session was held on Nov. 20, and the next is scheduled for Jan. 22.
We also released an on-demand pharmacist educational webinar series featuring expert discussions and insights on cutting-edge treatments, with each episode offering continuing education credits.
ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition will feature more than 11 hours of continuing education focused on next-generation therapeutics. Sessions will explore ultra-high-cost drug management, clinical data and practice approaches for new indications, investigational gene therapy trials and solutions, and best practices for live therapeutics.
Pharmacists must lead the way in shaping policy, guiding implementation, and ensuring patient access. We invite you to visit the ASHP Center for Next-Generation Therapeutics for the latest resources as we work to provide the knowledge, tools, and advocacy necessary to advance the pharmacy profession and deliver optimal patient care. Together, we will unlock the full potential of next-generation therapeutics.
Thank you for all you do for your patients and our profession.
Sincerely,
Paul
