Technology Infrastructure

Multiple platforms and technologies are available to support delivery of telehealth services. Characteristics to consider when evaluating potential platforms include accessibility, data security, customization, EHR integration, and overall usability. Patient-facing components of the platform and tools are also essential as ease of use and device compatibility can influence patient engagement with telehealth services.

Ensure Compatibility with Existing Systems

Telehealth platforms integrated into the EHR can support workflow efficiency and enhance ease of documentation. Compatibility with existing clinical workflows help reduce duplication. Privacy and data security are critical considerations when evaluating infrastructure to ensure HIPAA compliance (see Data Management and Security section). Documentation and communication functionalities should align with established workflows to facilitate coordination across the care team.

Plan for Technical Support and Maintenance

Organizations should collaborate with information technology teams to provide training and ongoing technical support to those using the platform. It is also important to have contingency plans in place and procedures readily available to maintain continuity of services if unplanned disruptions occur.
